AI visibility
Overview
AI visibility is an umbrella metric for how often and how prominently an entity (brand, product, person, or page) appears across the outputs of AI systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews. It is the AI-search analogue of "search visibility" in classical SEO, but it decomposes into several distinct sub-metrics that are frequently conflated.[1]
Because no standards body defines AI visibility, vendors measure it differently. A precise treatment separates at least three components: whether an entity is mentioned, whether it is cited with a link or source, and its share of such appearances relative to alternatives.
How it is measured
AI visibility is typically estimated by running a fixed set of representative prompts across one or more models and recording:
- Mention — the entity is named in the answer (see Citation rate vs Mention rate).
- Citation — the entity's source is attributed or linked (see Source attribution).
- Share of voice — the entity's proportion of mentions or citations across the prompt set (see Share of voice in AI).
- Position/prominence — where in the answer the entity appears.
Results vary by model, prompt phrasing, and time, so measurements are reported per-model and per-prompt-set rather than as a single absolute number.
| Term | Relationship to AI visibility |
|---|---|
| AI visibility | Umbrella metric combining mention, citation, share, position |
| Mention rate | One component: frequency of being named |
| Citation rate | One component: frequency of being cited/linked |
| Share of voice in AI | One component: relative share vs competitors |
| Classical search visibility | Analogue on ranked-link surfaces, not AI answers |
AI visibility is not a single measurement: reporting it as one number hides the difference between being mentioned and being cited, which can diverge substantially.
Examples
- An entity named in 40% of test answers but linked in only 12% has high mention but low citation visibility.
- Tracking that 40/12 split per model over time is an AI-visibility measurement program.
