AI Overviews

AI Overviews — Google's AI-generated answer block, displayed above organic search results, that synthesizes information from multiple web sources with inline citations.

Overview

AI Overviews is Google's name for its generative answer feature in Google Search, launched in the United States in May 2024. When triggered, an AI Overview appears above traditional organic results and provides a synthesized, multi-sentence answer to the user's query, with numbered citations linking to web sources.

AI Overviews are generated by Gemini models integrated with Google's web index. They represent Google's primary deployment of generative AI in consumer search and are the largest-scale instance of a generative search engine in terms of query volume.

The feature was previously available in limited form as Search Generative Experience (SGE) during a 2023 opt-in beta period.

How source selection works

Google does not publish the full ranking criteria for AI Overview source selection, but available evidence and documentation indicate:

  • Sources must be indexable and pass Google's quality signals (E-E-A-T, page experience).
  • Content structure influences selection — definition-first, well-organized pages with clear factual claims are more extractable.
  • Cited sources in AI Overviews do not necessarily correspond to the top organic results for the same query.
  • Google-Extended (robots.txt token) controls whether a site's content is eligible for use in Gemini training; it is separate from eligibility for AI Overviews citation (controlled by standard Googlebot crawl).

Measurement

AI visibility in AI Overviews is typically measured by:

  • Presence rate: fraction of tracked queries for which a site is cited.
  • Citation vs mention rate: whether the site is explicitly linked (cited) vs mentioned by name without attribution.
  • Prompt-level ranking: tracking position within the AI Overview block across repeated test queries.

GEO implications

Being cited in an AI Overview is a GEO outcome. Content structured for AI Overview citation typically:

  • Leads with a clear, extractable definition or answer.
  • Uses structured headings that map to query subtopics.
  • Supplies primary sources (which may be carried through into citations).
  • Avoids conversational filler that increases text length without informational density.

Zero-click interactions increase significantly when an AI Overview resolves the query; this shifts the value of organic visibility from click-through to brand citation.
