Zero-click answer

From llmref.wiki
Zero-click answer — A search interaction resolved entirely on the results surface, so the user obtains an answer without clicking through to any source page.

Overview

A zero-click answer (also zero-click result) is a search response in which the user's query is satisfied by content displayed directly on the search engine results page — leaving no need, and often no incentive, to visit an originating website. The answer may be drawn from a featured snippet, knowledge panel, AI Overview, or generative answer block.

Zero-click interactions have grown substantially with the adoption of AI-generated answer surfaces (AI Overviews, Perplexity, Bing Copilot). For a site that was previously a click destination, zero-click answers represent organic traffic displacement: the content is consumed without a session being recorded.

The interaction is distinct from user abandonment (where a user leaves without getting an answer): in the zero-click case the user is satisfied; the traffic simply never transited to the source.

Zero-click and AI Overviews

AI Overviews (Google) is the primary driver of the post-2023 increase in zero-click answers for informational queries. An AI Overview synthesizes an answer from multiple web sources, displays it at the top of the page with collapsed citations, and may fully resolve the user's query without any click. Studies in 2024 reported that AI-Overview queries showed substantially lower click-through rates to cited sources than equivalent queries without AI Overviews.[1]

GEO implications

Zero-click answers invert the traditional GEO value chain:

  • In classic SEO, visibility requires a click to deliver value to the source.
  • With zero-click AI answers, being cited — even without a click — is the measure of visibility. A site that is cited in an AI Overview may gain brand recognition and perceived authority without a corresponding session.
  • Citation rate and AI visibility therefore become more meaningful metrics than click-through rate for content whose goal is authority-building rather than traffic.
